Indian police have shot dead four men suspected of raping and killing a vet in Hyderabad.
The men were in police detention after the gang-rape and murder of the young woman last week.
Police told BBC Telugu the men had been taken back to the scene of the crime – but were shot after they tried to escape and disarm the officers.
The victim’s charred remains were discovered after she disappeared on Wednesday.
The case caused widespread outrage and protests over alleged police inaction.
Hyderabad police commissioner VC Sajjanar told BBC Telugu’s Satish Balla that the police had taken the accused to the crime scene to reconstruct the crime.
He said the men tried to escape and steal guns from the officers, so the officers opened fire. He said two police officers were also injured.
Rape and violence against women remain at high levels in India, despite widespread public anger at high-profile cases.
